Tragic crash: Girl killed, family injured by speeding cop

A tragic incident unfolded as a six-year-old girl lost her life in a high-speed crash caused by a Florida police officer allegedly driving at 104mph in a 50mph zone. The officer, identified as Zachary Krug, 25, was reportedly rushing to his shift when the accident occurred on April 15.

Krug was said to have accelerated to 104 mph after stopping at a red light and activating his unmarked vehicle’s lights to maneuver through traffic. The collision took place at the intersection of Fowler Avenue and North Avenue, where Krug collided with a woman, Samantha Sakowski, who was completing Uber Eats deliveries with her three children in the car.

The impact left Sakowski and her children severely injured, with her 6-year-old daughter, Leila, tragically succumbing to her injuries. The two other children, aged 18 months and 8 years, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

During a bond hearing, prosecutors presented dash camera footage showing Krug accelerating before the crash, claiming he was pursuing another speeding motorist. However, the defense argued that Krug was on duty and following a speeding vehicle, leading to the tragic collision.

State Attorney Suzy Lopez refuted the defense’s claims, stating there was no evidence supporting Krug was in pursuit of another vehicle. Lopez condemned Krug’s actions, emphasizing that his negligence led to the death of a young girl and endangered other lives on the road.

Following the incident, a GoFundMe page was set up by the victims’ family to support their medical expenses. The fundraiser has garnered over $19,000, aiding in the ongoing medical treatment of the injured siblings.

Krug was terminated from his position at the Temple Terrace Police Department and was detained at Hillsborough County Jail. He posted a $90,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 13 for further proceedings.
