Donald Trump has announced plans for the reinstatement of a blockade on Iranian ports by the US and the implementation of toll collection, asserting the US’s role as the protector of the Hormuz Strait. This declaration came after a recent exchange of attacks between the US and Iran.
Iran reported targeting US military sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Jordan, while US forces retaliated by focusing their attacks on Iranian port cities along the coastline. Trump, in a statement on Truth Social, declared that the US would charge ships for safe passage through the crucial waterway, emphasizing that the Hormuz Strait would remain open to all countries except Iran.
The president stated that the US would enforce the “Iranian Blockade” to restrict Iran’s ships and customers, while other nations would have fair access to the strait. Trump also emphasized that the US would be recognized as the “Guardian of the Hormuz Strait” and would seek reimbursement for expenses incurred in ensuring safety and security in the region.
Recent clashes between the US and Iran have raised concerns about the progress of ceasefire discussions. Despite signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cease hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping, unresolved issues remain, including Iran’s nuclear program, access to frozen assets, and control of the strait’s long-term management.
Tensions escalated further as Iran warned against US interference in the strait’s management. The Iranian Armed Forces vowed to respond vigorously to any disruptions caused by the US military, cautioning regional leaders against supporting US military actions in the region.
Both the US and Iran have expressed a desire to avoid a full-scale war, although disagreements over the MoU’s terms continue to fuel the ongoing conflicts in the region.
