Andy Burnham Gains Momentum for PM Bid

Andy Burnham is set to promise economic growth and uphold Labour’s budget regulations as he seeks to enhance his financial credibility following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation, positioning him as a likely contender for the Prime Minister’s office.

The former mayor of Greater Manchester is anticipated to address fiscal policy next week, as initially reported by The Times, after returning to Westminster as an MP post his victory in the Makerfield by-election.

Discussions are underway regarding a potential reshuffling of the Cabinet, with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood being considered as potential replacements for Rachel Reeves as chancellor. Nonetheless, Burnham’s supporters have clarified that no positions have been confirmed or agreements made as of Monday evening.

The chances of an unopposed route to the top position for the former mayor escalated on Monday, as his main rival, former health secretary Wes Streeting, endorsed him as Sir Keir’s successor.

However, Darren Jones is reportedly contemplating entering the race, a move that could complicate Burnham’s path, following reports of encouragement from Starmer loyalists.

Sources close to the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister indicated his current reluctance to join the race, emphasizing the need for assurances on economic policy in light of concerns about potential market instability.

If Burnham secures the necessary support to stand as the sole candidate, he could potentially become Prime Minister as early as mid-July. In a heartfelt speech outside No 10, the Prime Minister acknowledged the loss of support from his MPs and pledged a smooth transition of power to his successor.

Standing by his achievements, he assured full support to the incoming leader, recognizing the progress made during his tenure. Sir Keir announced plans to expedite the appointment of a new leader by the time Parliament reconvenes from its summer break on September 1, with nominations closing on July 16.

Candidates have until the deadline to garner support from at least 81 Labour MPs. In a gesture of gratitude, Sir Keir and his wife Victoria hosted a gathering for No 10 staff in the garden, thanking them for their ongoing support.

Burnham commended Sir Keir’s service to the country but emphasized that his resignation signals a period of transition. He expressed confidence in the Labour movement’s ability to move forward positively and ensure a renewal process for the party and the nation.
