During an appearance on ITV’s This Morning, Dr. Scott Miller highlighted that while humans may revel in the thrill of tournament football, dogs can be overwhelmed by the experience. He explained that the loud and high-pitched noises generated by human excitement can be particularly distressing for dogs due to their heightened sensitivity to sound.
Dr. Miller emphasized that dogs possess much more acute hearing abilities compared to humans, being able to hear sounds from significantly farther distances. He likened the sudden outbursts during matches to the anxiety-inducing effects of fireworks on pets, noting that the unexpected cheers, shouting, and celebrations can be frightening for animals who receive no prior warning of the impending noise.
Millions of football fans gearing up to watch matches during the tournament should be mindful of their pets’ well-being. Research from Dogs Trust indicates that loud or unfamiliar noises, such as fireworks, thunderstorms, and shouting, can trigger anxiety in many dogs.
According to the animal welfare charity Blue Cross, signs of stress in dogs include trembling, panting, pacing, hiding, excessive barking, and attempts to escape from noisy environments. Some dogs may also exhibit withdrawn or clingy behavior when feeling anxious.
To help alleviate their pets’ stress, Dr. Miller recommended providing a quiet space away from the excitement where dogs can retreat. Additionally, engaging pets in physical activity before kick-off, such as a walk or interactive play session, can promote relaxation later on. Playing low-level background music and drawing the curtains during particularly noisy celebrations can also help mask sudden noises.
While fans may be engrossed in the on-screen action, experts advise keeping a watchful eye on pets to ensure a comfortable experience for both owners and their dogs throughout the tournament.
