“Riots and Racism: Belfast Erupts in Violence”

Masked individuals threw bricks and a petrol bomb at police, setting multiple vehicles on fire during riots in Belfast and Northern Ireland following a violent stabbing incident. The suspect, Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old Sudanese national, has been held in custody for four weeks after being charged with attempted murder. Anti-immigration demonstrations started in Belfast, resulting in property destruction and attacks on non-white residents. The unrest continued, spreading to other areas in Northern Ireland, with incidents such as a masked rioter catching fire while attempting to throw a petrol bomb in Portadown.

Police deployed a water cannon as around 200 masked youths tried to approach a migrant hotel in Newtownabbey. The violence was condemned by Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn as “racist thuggery.” The stabbing victim, Stephen Ogilvie, has suffered severe injuries, including losing his left eye, but is in stable condition. Nurses and healthcare workers have also faced intimidation and threats amidst the chaos.

Twelve police officers were injured, and 16 arrests were made during the second night of unrest. The Northern Ireland Secretary expressed relief that the disorder was less severe than the previous night but condemned the racist attacks and violence. Responding to the situation, various officials and community leaders have called for an end to the violence and emphasized the need for peaceful protests and unity in Northern Ireland.
