Posing with his spouse, this is the last poignant image captured of Faizan Rafik before he embarked on the tragic Air India flight that met a fatal end last year.
Within hours, he perished along with 259 others when the aircraft bound for London plummeted from the sky shortly after takeoff. Now marking the first anniversary of that fateful day, Faizan’s relative, Sameer Rafik, reminisces about how the 25-year-old brought joy to everyone he encountered.
Revealing details in an exclusive interview, Sameer also discloses their final dialogue, Faizan’s poignant resting place beside his late mother, and the philanthropic endeavors undertaken in his cousin’s honor to enhance the world. Sameer, aged 27, shared with the Mirror: “Life feels utterly hollow without Faizan – our lives lack serenity now.
“Faizan was an exceptional individual – I have never encountered a sibling like him in my entire existence. He always carried a smile on his face. I tried to emulate him, but fell short.”
Faizan tragically lost his life when Air India flight 171 crashed into a medical college building in the west Indian city of Ahmedabad less than a minute after departing the runway on June 12 last year. The incident claimed 260 lives, including 19 on the ground, and left numerous others injured, marking it as the most severe aviation catastrophe in a decade. Notably, one passenger, a British national, miraculously survived.
Ten days prior, Sameer had driven Faizan from Leicester to Gatwick Airport as he embarked on his journey to India. Little did they know it would be their final voyage together. “He embraced me – had I known it was our final hug, I would never have let him go,” Sameer emotionally revealed.
“During that journey, he confided every detail about his life. He shared his aspirations and dreams. Having just passed his driving test, he was exuberant. He expressed his eagerness to obtain his driver’s license upon return and wanted me to accompany him to purchase his inaugural vehicle.”
Considering Faizan akin to a brother, Sameer reminisces about the simple, everyday moments they cherished together in Leicester. “We met daily. When he visited my residence, he would incessantly ring the bell. I still yearn for that sound. Since last year, the bell has remained silent. He would routinely pass by my shop on his way to work. He would pause, insisting I drop him home,” Sameer shared.
Recently, Sameer journeyed to the family’s native town of Diu in the Indian state of Gujarat to visit Faizan’s grave. Laid to rest beside his mother, who passed away during Faizan’s childhood, a snapshot of their final resting place adorned with blossoms was shared by Sameer, remarking, “[Faizan] was fortunate to be interred beside his mother. They shared a special bond. It holds profound significance.”
