“Man Charged with Murder of Stage 4 Cancer Patient Found in Suitcase”

A murder charge has been filed against a man in connection with the death of a woman battling Stage 4 breast cancer, whose body was discovered inside a suitcase.

The victim, Vanessa Sanchez, aged 37, was found deceased in her residence in Berkeley, California, after authorities were alerted to a body inside a building on May 30. The property manager contacted the police after conducting a wellness check, leading to the discovery of Sanchez’s remains concealed in a bin bag placed within a suitcase.

The tragic incident occurred shortly after reports indicated that Sanchez was seen entering her apartment with Damarcus David Jones, who has now been accused of her murder. Investigators disclosed that Jones, 28, was last spotted entering Sanchez’s residence with her on May 24, which marked the final day she was seen alive. Surveillance footage captured Jones returning to the building carrying a large roller suitcase.

Jones was apprehended on Tuesday, June 2, in Solano County, California, and charged with murder. Court records referenced by NBC revealed that Jones confessed to killing Sanchez and attempted to mask the odor in her apartment by opening windows and using an air purifier.

Sanchez’s untimely demise deeply shook her family, as she had been courageously battling advanced breast cancer. Her mother, Mary Sanchez, had initiated a GoFundMe campaign following Vanessa’s diagnosis in 2023, highlighting her daughter’s admirable qualities and the challenging journey ahead. The campaign, aimed at covering medical expenses during her fight against cancer, raised $47,415 toward a $60,000 goal. A recent update mourned Vanessa’s passing and honored her shining spirit.

Vanessa’s loved ones cherished her for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support. While grieving her loss, they expressed gratitude for her impactful presence in their lives and celebrated her resilience and grace in the face of adversity.
