Discovering sourdough bread can be a game-changer for your taste buds. Its unique tangy flavor and chewy texture make it a favorite for many, including myself. Jason’s is a well-known brand for sourdough, and I have been a loyal customer, especially enjoying their ciabattin variety for its ideal toasting size.
While Jason’s sourdough typically costs between £2.15 and £2.50, I decided to test four supermarket own-brand sourdough loaves to see how they compare in terms of taste and value. Visiting Tesco, Aldi, Asda, and Sainsbury’s, I found prices ranging from £1.50 to £2.44, with interesting variations in loaf sizes and costs.
After trying slices from each loaf alongside Jason’s ciabattin, I found a clear winner among the supermarket options. Despite the challenges of finding an original sourdough loaf in supermarkets, I discovered a worthy alternative that surpassed my expectations in taste and value.
The standout loaf I found delivers the classic chewy sourdough consistency with a unique depth of flavor. While the slices are smaller than traditional sourdough loaves, they toast perfectly and offer plenty of slices that freeze well. Although not ideal for sandwiches, this loaf excels when toasted.
Scoring it an impressive 8/10, this loaf was slightly pricier but worth it for its quality and taste. On the other hand, one of the supermarket options fell short with a lower score of 7/10 due to its underwhelming taste and dense consistency. Another loaf, scoring 5/10, failed to meet sourdough expectations with a lack of chewiness and dryness.
Sainsbury’s surprisingly offered good value with a tangy, soft, and well-toasted loaf, earning it a score of 8/10 as the runner-up. However, the slices were thinly cut with noticeable holes, impacting the overall experience.
The clear winner for me was the Tesco Finest sourdough loaf, boasting a perfect crust, rich flavor, and excellent toastability. Despite a few drawbacks like the number of holes in the bread, its overall flavor and quality stood out, making it the top choice among the tested loaves.
While the packaging may have changed, the Tesco Finest sourdough loaf is a standout choice priced at just £1.50 with a Clubcard or £2 without, offering a delightful sourdough experience at a reasonable cost.
