“Zelensky Vows Escalation of Strikes Deep Inside Russia”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that his military will escalate preemptive strikes on key targets deep inside Russia in an effort to weaken Vladimir Putin’s capacity to launch attacks.

In a forceful declaration regarding Kyiv’s deep-strike operations, Zelensky pledged that Ukrainian intelligence and special forces will ensure that “Russians are aware of the existence of this war.” This statement comes amidst increasing pressure from the Kremlin on Belarus to actively engage in the conflict by launching offensives on Ukraine from the north.

Zelensky’s warning was issued shortly before another long-range attack on a significant fuel depot in the southern Krasnodar region by Ukrainian special forces. This attack marks the second assault of its kind in less than two weeks, targeting key resources used by Putin’s military efforts. The Ukrainian President emphasized, “Our intelligence services and military have been directed to proactively target facilities utilized by Russia to support its war efforts.”

These actions are in direct response to Russia’s assaults on various Ukrainian regions, including Sumy, Kharkiv, Poltava, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk. Zelensky condemned Russian aggression as the primary driver of the conflict and stressed the importance of Russians recognizing their role in perpetuating the war. Following Ukraine’s offensive, Russia retaliated with drone strikes on Zaporizhzhia.

The Institute for the Study of War reported that the Kremlin is exerting pressure on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to escalate Belarusian involvement in the conflict. The Kremlin aims to divert Ukrainian military resources away from the eastern front by launching drone attacks from the Belarusian border with Ukraine. The report suggests that Russia is leveraging financial support to coerce Belarus into compliance.

Despite Kremlin pressure, Lukashenko has resisted allowing Belarusian Armed Forces to directly support Russian operations in Ukraine or to extensively recruit Belarusians into the Russian military since 2022. Belarus has maintained a relatively neutral stance towards Ukraine, avoiding adopting the Kremlin’s narrative that portrays Ukraine as a threat. Lukashenko continues to resist intensifying efforts to involve Belarus in the war while safeguarding Belarusian sovereignty.

The ISM assessment highlights Lukashenko’s delicate balancing act of maintaining Russian support for Belarus while preserving the nation’s sovereignty. Belarus remains hesitant to align with Russia’s aggressive stance towards Ukraine, displaying Lukashenko’s reluctance to be drawn into the conflict.
