“Trump Administration Criticized for Restricted Alerts After Venezuela Earthquake”

The response of Donald Trump’s administration to the recent Venezuela earthquake has faced criticism due to the dissemination of natural disaster alerts on restricted social media platforms. The US embassy in Caracas, operational again after seven years of closure, issued alerts following two significant earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 occurring within a minute. The twin quakes have resulted in the death of at least 164 individuals, with the latest one being the strongest in Venezuela in two centuries, according to President Delcy Rodríguez, who anticipates a rising death toll.

Despite President Trump’s commitment to providing aid to those affected, the urgent messages sent by his administration may not have reached their intended recipients. US officials at the embassy utilized platforms like Twitter and Instagram to warn American citizens in Venezuela about the disaster, advising them to steer clear of damaged areas, avoid entering compromised buildings, stay updated via local media, and seek secure shelter.

However, due to heavy censorship of media and social platforms in the country, many Americans residing in Venezuela may not have received these critical notifications. With platforms like Twitter being blocked or inaccessible to a large portion of the public, over 414,000 individuals following the embassy’s page on Twitter, including Elon Musk’s followers, might have missed the message. Various online commentators, like Venezuelan-American journalist Ali Bianco, highlighted the restrictions on local media and social media access in Venezuela.

Concerns were raised by users on social media platforms like Instagram, emphasizing the need to lift internet restrictions for better communication during crises. The Trump administration, which assumed control of Venezuela’s oil industry after the removal of former leader Nicolas Maduro earlier this year, pledged to offer assistance. President Trump directed federal agencies to prepare for rapid response, assuring that the US stands by its allies in times of need.
