“Yulin Dog Meat Festival Resurfaces Amid Global Outcry”

An infamous festival known for its consumption of dog and cat meat has reappeared in a city located in southern China, despite facing strong opposition locally and internationally.

The Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival has recommenced in Yulin, prompting concerns from animal welfare advocates who fear the slaughter of thousands of animals before the festival concludes on June 30.

Initially established in 2010, the 10-day event has been heavily criticized for over a decade, leading to local authorities distancing themselves from it since 2014.

Reports indicate that thousands of dogs and cats endure grueling journeys under harsh conditions, often lacking food and water, only to meet their fate at the festival where approximately 10,000 animals were previously killed and consumed.

Activists have revealed that dogs and cats are either stolen from homes or forcefully taken from the streets, as evidenced by images showing terrified animals packed into wire cages without sustenance or hydration.

Recently, footage released by Humane World for Animals highlighted the escalating dog and cat meat trade in Yulin, urging China to halt this cruel practice for both animal welfare and public health reasons.

Critics argue that the festival, coinciding with the summer solstice, symbolizes the broader trade of dog and cat meat, drawing condemnation from international activists.

In a recent breakthrough, nine dogs, including three believed to be stolen pets, were rescued by animal welfare activists, showcasing a small victory amidst ongoing challenges.

Thanks to national and global advocacy efforts, the number of dogs slaughtered during the festival’s peak period from June 20 to 22 has reportedly decreased to an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 dogs, indicating progress in combating this inhumane practice.
