The B-1 bombers previously stationed at RAF Fairford air base in the UK have been withdrawn by the United States following the recent arrests of several individuals on suspicion of terrorist activities. A Pentagon official confirmed the redeployment of the dozen bombers back to their home stations in the U.S. These aircraft had been utilized for U.S. operations targeting Iran.
According to a Pentagon spokesperson, security protocols prevented real-time disclosure of the movement of assets and forces, but it is now acknowledged that all U.S. bombers at RAF Fairford have returned to the United States.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham mentioned that there are strong indications of Iranian involvement in a suspected plot against the air base. However, Iran has refuted these allegations, labeling them as unfounded and summoning the British ambassador in Tehran to address the issue.
The removal of the aircraft from RAF Fairford was prompted by security concerns related to potential terrorist threats against the facility, as reported initially by The Wall Street Journal. The British government had granted the U.S. permission to utilize the bombers stationed at Fairford for targeting Iranian missile installations that posed a threat to ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz.
President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio both commented on the seriousness of the plot, with Trump suggesting plans for significant damage and Rubio implicating the involvement of a foreign entity.
