UK to Provide Electricity Aid to Ukraine, Seize Russian Shadow Fleet

Ukrainian families impacted by Russian assaults on critical power infrastructure will receive assistance from the United Kingdom through a substantial two-year energy agreement. Keir Starmer has revealed the UK’s commitment to supplying electricity to Ukraine’s nuclear facilities for the next two years to ensure continuous access to power. The Prime Minister has pledged to support the war-torn nation during upcoming challenging seasons.

During the G7 summit in Evian, France, Mr. Starmer introduced a £210 million aid package aimed at aiding Ukraine and urged global leaders to take stronger actions to secure peace in the region. Downing Street is set to unveil a new set of sanctions targeting Russia’s unauthorized shadow fleet, highlighting the UK’s firm stance against Russian aggression.

British forces recently conducted a groundbreaking operation by seizing a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel. This fleet, known as the “ghost fleet,” clandestinely transports 75% of Russia’s sanctioned oil, serving as a crucial financial lifeline for Vladimir Putin’s military endeavors, while also posing environmental and infrastructure risks.

To address these challenges, No10 will announce additional sanctions targeting vessels involved in the transportation of Russian Liquid Natural Gas. Mr. Starmer aims to enhance his defense credentials at the G7 summit following the resignation of Defense Secretary John Healey over concerns of inadequate military funding.

The UK government stressed the importance of learning from the Ukrainian conflict as a key element of their delayed Defense Investment Plan. Despite potential tensions surrounding defense spending, Mr. Starmer is expected to engage with world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, at the G7 summit to discuss Ukraine and European security matters.

In a statement, the Prime Minister emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and curbing Russian aggression. The energy deal, which was formalized during a meeting between the PM and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, will involve UK Export Finance providing £210 million to Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Energoatom, Ukraine’s primary nuclear power producer.
