“Maverick Sergeant Faces Trial for Toxic Behavior”

A police sergeant, Paul Street, is facing trial at the Old Bailey for multiple alleged offenses committed while serving at Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Street, described as a “maverick,” is accused of creating a “toxic” work environment within his team through WhatsApp interactions. The court heard that Street’s aggressive approach, although effective in combating serious crime, led to a culture of intolerance towards suspects and dissenting team members.

Street’s conduct came under scrutiny in 2021 when anti-corruption officers discovered two WhatsApp groups where derogatory and inappropriate comments were exchanged about colleagues and suspects. Street allegedly assaulted a suspect, Samuel Kayode, in 2020, boasting about the incident in a WhatsApp group and referring to himself as “Daddy.” A new team member reported the incident, prompting Street to urge members to clear the chat and dismiss dissenting voices.

Additionally, Street’s behavior towards a 17-year-old boy in custody and a female suspect raised concerns. He allegedly expressed a desire to bully the teenager and encouraged physical aggression towards him. Moreover, Street reportedly requested intimate content from the female suspect’s phone, demonstrating a pattern of inappropriate behavior.

Prosecutors highlighted Street’s disregard for professional conduct and ethical boundaries, emphasizing that his actions were not only dishonorable but also compromised public trust in law enforcement. Despite facing charges of assault, perverting the course of justice, and misconduct in public office, Street has denied any wrongdoing.

The ongoing trial at the Old Bailey continues to shed light on the alleged misconduct by Paul Street, underscoring the importance of upholding integrity and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
