“Trump Backs New Tariffs Amid Legal Challenge”

In response to a legal challenge, Donald Trump has supported the implementation of new tariffs on imports from the UK and numerous other countries. These tariffs replace previous ones that were deemed illegal by the US Supreme Court and expired recently.

During a statement in the Oval Office, the US President described the new tariffs as standard and in line with regulations. The White House defended the imposition of these charges by claiming that the targeted economies had not effectively enforced bans on goods produced using slave labor.

Simultaneously, a temporary 10% import levy, which had already affected the UK, expired, coinciding with the enforcement of the new tariffs. Trump expressed his disagreement with the Supreme Court’s decision and reiterated the administration’s use of various tariff mechanisms.

Following this development, a legal advocacy group filed a case in the US Court of International Trade in New York on behalf of two small businesses, challenging the latest import taxes. The Liberty Justice Centre, known for successfully contesting Trump’s previous tariffs, aims to overturn the replacement tariffs, stating that changing the statute does not alter the law.

The UK Government clarified that the recent announcement does not alter the 10% tariff rate faced by UK businesses. The UK, which exports significantly to the US, continues to maintain its commercial ties with the country amid the tariffs.

In a separate move, the US lifted import duties on Scotch whisky, following an announcement by the President after the state visit by the King and Queen in April.
