“Capture Nature’s Majesty: Weather Photographer of the Year Contest Open”

The competition for the prestigious title of Weather Photographer of the Year is in full swing, showcasing breathtaking images capturing the wonders of Mother Nature in action. The Royal Meteorological Society has unveiled a selection of last year’s winning photographs, featuring a mesmerizing circular rainbow, a powerful Texas storm, and a striking UFO-like cloud formation.

Photographers worldwide are invited to participate in this renowned competition, now in its second decade, by submitting captivating images that depict the beauty, strength, and impact of weather phenomena. The competition, which has just opened, aims to celebrate exceptional photography that highlights both the dramatic occurrences in weather and the increasing influence of climate change on our environment.

Last year’s winning entries also included awe-inspiring images such as cloud formations resembling ocean waves in the Czech Republic, rain-drenched fishermen in Myanmar, and intense sea conditions off the coast of Newhaven in the UK.

Prof Liz Bentley FRMetS, the Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society, emphasized the importance of the Weather Photographer of the Year competition in showcasing how weather shapes our world, from moments of natural splendor to events of significant consequence. She highlighted the crucial role these images play in educating and engaging people in the science behind weather and climate, particularly as our climate continues to evolve.

The competition is open to photographers of all skill levels, from seasoned professionals to passionate amateurs, and there is no entry fee. The winners will be announced in November, with Maria del Pilar Trigo Bonnin’s captivating photograph titled “Heading Home” standing out as one of the remarkable entries.
