A tragic incident occurred as a 13-year-old girl lost her life in a drowning accident while at a birthday celebration with her family on the eve of her 14th birthday. Palwasha Akbar passed away after encountering difficulties in the River Wharfe at Burnsall in North Yorkshire on May 31, as confirmed by a coroner on June 18.
The family had gathered at the popular riverside location to commemorate Palwasha’s upcoming 14th birthday on June 1 with a family barbecue amid the May heatwave. Assistant North Yorkshire coroner Alison Norton disclosed that Palwasha Akbar faced distress in the water at Bolton Abbey, specifically Burnsall, on May 31, 2026. She was rescued from the water and transported to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she was later pronounced deceased.
The coroner established drowning as the preliminary cause of Palwasha’s demise. Born in Pakistan on June 1, 2012, Palwasha resided in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The hearing was adjourned for a later date.
Tragically, Palwasha was among the 19 individuals who lost their lives in water-related incidents during the late May heatwave. Following her untimely passing, her family released a statement describing her as a compassionate and bright young girl who will be deeply missed by her loved ones and community.
