A former British immigration official and a retired Hong Kong police officer have been sentenced to prison for espionage activities on behalf of China.
Peter Wai, aged 41, was involved in conducting covert policing operations targeting Hong Kong pro-democracy activists residing in the UK under the direction of his supervisor, Bill Yuen, aged 66.
The pair, who hold dual Chinese-British citizenship, were apprehended following an unsuccessful attempt to seize a £16 million fraud suspect, Monica Kwong, from her residence in Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
After a trial lasting two months at the Old Bailey, they were found guilty of aiding a foreign intelligence service in violation of the National Security Act.
