South East Water has implemented a hosepipe ban due to the ongoing hot weather, affecting 2.4 million customers in Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire starting this Saturday. Customers are urged to reduce water usage immediately by refraining from using hosepipes for various purposes. Other water suppliers like Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, Southern Water, and Affinity Water have also imposed restrictions due to dry weather conditions and high water demand.
Concerns over declining river levels and groundwater sources have led South East Water to prioritize essential water needs such as drinking, cooking, and hygiene. The company’s water supply director, Douglas Whitfield, expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the ban but emphasized the importance of conserving water resources in the affected regions.
Recent data from the Met Office indicates prolonged dry spells in central and south-east England, with no recorded rainfall for several consecutive days. Reservoir storage levels in England are slightly below the long-term average, with some reservoirs experiencing notably low water levels. The situation is exacerbated by the increasing frequency of extreme heat and drought conditions attributed to climate change.
Greenpeace UK has highlighted the significant water losses from leaky pipes by water companies, urging government intervention to address network repairs and fossil-fuel pollution contributing to water scarcity. The organization warns of the long-term consequences for both people and the environment if proactive measures are not taken to ensure water security and sustainability.
