Britons planning trips to Dubai this summer might be feeling uneasy due to the recent escalation in the conflict between the US and Iran in the Middle East.
On Monday, the US carried out strikes on Iranian sites for the ninth consecutive day following heightened tensions that arose when both sides abandoned a temporary ceasefire agreement earlier in the month.
Tensions between the US and Iran have been ongoing since February when the US and Israel conducted joint strikes on key Iranian targets. In response, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and targeted various locations across the Middle East, including Dubai.
Despite these developments, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has maintained its travel advice for the United Arab Emirates, lifting the “all but essential travel” advisory issued on June 18.
While the US and Iran recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at ending the conflict within 60 days, this effort seems to have failed, allowing travelers to continue visiting the UAE without risking their travel insurance.
The FCDO no longer discourages non-essential travel to the UAE but cautions that the situation remains unpredictable, with the potential for attacks to resume suddenly. This warning was in effect as of July 20.
British nationals are advised to consult the FCDO’s crisis abroad document, heed advice from local authorities, and subscribe to FCDO travel advice email notifications.
In the event of a conflict resurgence, travelers are urged to avoid areas near security or military facilities, keep travel documents current, and follow instructions to seek shelter if necessary.
With the removal of the FCDO’s warning against non-essential travel to the UAE, travel insurance is likely to remain valid for new bookings. However, traveling against FCDO advice could jeopardize insurance coverage, so it is essential to review individual policy details.
Package holidays are expected to resume as usual, and canceling may not warrant a refund unless the FCDO advises against all travel, allowing for penalty-free cancellations for full refunds.
