Five individuals lost their lives while trying to save a struggling swimmer in a river, as confirmed by authorities. The tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, July 19, along the Scioto River in Powell, Ohio. According to Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer, a group of people gathered near the river when one person entered the water for a swim, leading to a chain of events where multiple individuals jumped in to assist but also found themselves in distress.
Emergency services were alerted by a passing motorist who noticed a frightened child from the group seeking help along a nearby road. Search teams discovered two deceased women at the scene on Sunday, with the bodies of three men recovered from the river the following day, as reported by Tracy Whited, a spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.
The river’s swift and high water flow on Sunday, indicated by data from a U.S. Geological Survey water gauge near the dam, further complicated rescue efforts. The flow rate surged to approximately 350 cubic feet per second, a significant increase over a short period.
This tragic event occurred just days after a flash flood in southern Utah claimed the lives of five individuals during a hiking trip. Sheriff Balzer mentioned that the child who sought help has been placed under the care of family services, along with another child under 10 years old. Efforts are underway to inform the victims’ families about the unfortunate incident.
Sheriff Balzer emphasized the importance of understanding one’s swimming abilities and being cautious near water bodies. He advised individuals to assess their swimming skills, ensure the presence of others for assistance in emergencies, and remain vigilant about water conditions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
