“Santander Ends Annual Fee Statements, Introduces 8% Savings Account”

Santander has decided to discontinue sending customers annual statements detailing their incurred fees. These statements typically outline charges accrued over the past year, including overdraft fees and foreign transaction fees. For instance, Santander’s current accounts usually impose a standard variable rate of 39.94% for arranged overdrafts. Additionally, the annual statement also reflects any earned interest.

Starting in August, Santander will no longer issue these statements; however, customers can conveniently review their fees through online or mobile banking services. Regular bank statements also provide a breakdown of fees and charges. In positive news for customers, Santander recently introduced a new regular savings account offering 8% interest.

The new Santander savings account provides an 8% interest rate, which comprises a 5% bonus for the initial 12 months, followed by a reduction to 3% afterward, as the rates are subject to change. Customers can save up to £200 per month in this account, allowing them to accumulate £2,504 with interest after one year and £5,018 by the end of the second year. Withdrawals can be made without penalties by transferring funds to a Santander current account. This regular saver account is exclusively accessible to Santander current account holders.

Santander’s parent company, Banco Santander, unveiled plans to reduce costs by more than 500 million euros (£433 million) by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The company aims to generate over one billion euros (£860 billion) in additional revenues and cost savings from AI by 2028, with a significant portion anticipated from cost reduction measures.

The cost savings will be achieved through automation, increased productivity, and streamlined processes. Banco Santander has not disclosed the exact impact on jobs resulting from these AI-driven initiatives, and no specific job reduction program related to the AI implementation has been announced.
