A significant solar eclipse, the most striking visible from the UK since 1999, is approaching rapidly.
Scheduled for August 12, the Moon will align directly between the Sun and Earth, obstructing sunlight from reaching our planet partially or entirely.
In various European regions, including the UK and Ireland, spectators are in for a remarkable spectacle as they witness a partial solar eclipse, with the Moon obscuring up to 90% of the Sun in many areas.
Conversely, a total solar eclipse, where the Moon entirely covers the Sun, will be visible along a narrow trajectory spanning Greenland, Iceland, Spain, northern Russia, and a small section of northern Portugal. This occurrence marks mainland Spain’s first total solar eclipse experience in over a century.
The forthcoming solar eclipse in the UK and Ireland will signify the most profound eclipse since August 11, 1999, when a total eclipse was observable from a significant portion of Cornwall and Devon.
A solar eclipse materializes when the Moon shifts directly between the Sun and Earth, casting the Earth into the Moon’s shadow. Due to the Moon’s smaller size compared to Earth, the shadow only encompasses a limited area of the Earth’s surface, making the eclipse visible from specific locations.
Typically, there are between two and five solar eclipses annually, with a total solar eclipse occurring somewhere on Earth approximately every 18 months.
Parts of Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, Spain, and north-east Portugal will witness a total solar eclipse, while a partial solar eclipse will be viewable across a substantial part of Europe, sections of Africa, North America, the Atlantic Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean.
The specific timings of the solar eclipse will vary depending on the observer’s location.
For instance, in London, Bristol, and Cardiff, the eclipse will commence around 6.17pm, peak at about 7.12pm, and conclude around 8.06pm, as advised by Royal Museums Greenwich.
According to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, individuals in London will witness approximately 90% of the Sun obscured by the Moon.
The observatory highlights that locations in the south-west of the UK will observe the most extensive eclipse coverage, with Cornwall expecting around 95% coverage and Pembrokeshire in south-west Wales anticipating approximately 94% coverage.
Those able to venture to the south-west of Ireland will encounter some of the highest coverage in the British Isles, with nearly 97.5% of the Sun obscured by the Moon.
