A man has been sentenced to life in prison for raping and murdering his estranged wife, attempting to stage her death as suicide. Michael Thompson, 56, was found guilty of subjecting Kimberley Thompson to years of abuse, including controlling behavior and physical violence, before suffocating her in their Northampton residence in August last year.
During the trial that lasted seven weeks, it was revealed that Thompson alleged he and Ms. Thompson engaged in consensual sexual activity before he discovered her lifeless body, surrounded by pills and alcohol containers. However, a post-mortem examination showed minimal levels of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine in her system, with no evidence of alcohol consumption.
Thompson, residing on Pinewood Road in Northampton, chose not to attend his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court, with his defense barrister explaining his absence as voluntary.
