A massive wildfire has erupted in a popular vacation destination, leading to the evacuation of 1,000 individuals and scorching an expanse equivalent to the city of Manchester. The Zaragoza wildfire in the northern Spanish community of Aragon has devoured nearly 16,000 hectares since it started on Wednesday. Initially small, it has morphed into one of Spain’s most destructive forest fires this year, prompting over 1,000 evacuations with authorities stating that the situation is still unstable.
New alarming drone footage has captured the ferocious flames engulfing the historic Cinco Villas area. The footage from Spain’s Guardia Civil shows vibrant yellow flames and massive smoke columns rising from the ground, visible at night. The fire’s orange borders can be seen stretching for miles into the horizon, spreading at a rapid pace of approximately 60 meters per minute.
On the ground, about 400 emergency responders are battling the inferno, aided by 19 aircraft tirelessly fighting the flames. Emergency services anticipate several days will be needed to fully contain the fire, given the decreasing humidity and winds pushing the blaze westward. Residents in multiple areas, including Malpica de Arba, Orés, AsÃn, Luesia, and Uncastillo, have been instructed to leave their homes due to the fire’s impact.
Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, Aragón’s regional minister for finance, the interior, and public administration, expressed concerns over the unpredictable weather conditions exacerbating the crisis. He emphasized the ongoing critical and complex nature of the situation, highlighting the immense effort required to manage and extinguish the wildfire in the coming days.
Ensuring the safety of residents remains the primary focus for local authorities, with evacuees being accommodated in various facilities. Additional support and psychological assistance are being provided to those affected by the Red Cross and other organizations. Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has assured the mobilization of all necessary resources to address the emergency and urged the public to exercise extreme caution in the face of the wildfire threat.
