Tensions escalated at the end of the match, resulting in altercations between players. Leandro Parades of Argentina was red-carded post-game for a physical confrontation with Eric Garcia of Spain.
Initially, the atmosphere in Buenos Aires, home to 3 million people, was calm until disturbances erupted between law enforcement and fans around 11:45 pm, according to Argentine newspaper Infobae.
Violence erupted near the Obelisk, a national monument, where a group of supporters tried to breach the protective fencing around it.
For about 20 minutes, chaos ensued as a significant number of fans started hurling glass bottles and other objects at the police. Law enforcement responded by deploying tear gas and a water cannon to disperse the angry crowds nearby, as reported by the news outlet.
Reports from Infobae indicate that at least 15 individuals have been arrested by the police, with multiple injuries sustained during the riot. The status of the injured remains unknown.
Images depicting debris strewn across the streets of the city have been circulated globally, with one photo suggesting a police officer kicking a grounded supporter.
Despite the defeat, Argentinians are set to enjoy a national holiday. President Javier Milei announced the decision shortly after Rodri lifted the World Cup trophy, but the specific date for the celebration will be determined by the players and coaching staff.
An English translation of Milei’s statement in Spanish reads: “WORLD CELEBRATION.”
“Given the concerns regarding the celebrations for the achievement of the Argentine National Team, I inform the public that a national holiday will be declared based on the decision of the players and coaching staff regarding the celebration day.”
Following their victory in the 2022 World Cup, Argentinians enjoyed a public holiday, held the Tuesday after the final, as the players returned to Buenos Aires for a celebratory parade centered around the Obelisk.
