Voters are set to cast their ballots on Monday in three federal byelections taking place in North Vancouver–Capilano, Beaches–East York, and Chicoutimi–Le Fjord, located in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, respectively. With the current distribution of seats, the Liberal party holds 170 seats in the House of Commons, while opposition parties collectively have 166 seats.
For the Liberals to maintain control of the legislative agenda once all seats are filled, they must secure victories in at least two of the byelections. The most closely contested race is anticipated in Chicoutimi–Le Fjord, where the seat has become vacant following the resignation of former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who was appointed to the Senate in the previous month.
In this competitive race, the Liberals and Bloc Québécois are vying for the seat, with polls indicating a tight race between the two parties. The Liberal candidate is Daniel Gobeil, while Caroline Dubé is running for the Bloc. Additional candidates in Chicoutimi–Le Fjord include Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, Raphaël Émond for the New Democratic Party, and Nathe Perrone for the Green Party.
Moving to Beaches–East York in Ontario, candidates aim to fill the vacancy left by former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who secured a significant victory in the 2025 federal election. The contenders in this riding are Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.
In North Vancouver–Capilano, British Columbia, the focus is on replacing former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who won the riding in the 2025 federal election. Wilkinson vacated his seat after being appointed as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union by Prime Minister Mark Carney. Candidates in this riding include Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.
CBC News will provide special coverage of the byelections, featuring chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and Power & Politics host David Cochrane starting at 9:30 p.m. ET. If the Liberals do not secure victories in all three byelections, they will have more opportunities in the future to attain the necessary wins for a majority.
Furthermore, there are pending byelections in the Quebec ridings of Saint-Hyacinthe–Bagot–Acton and Rosemont–La Petite–Patrie, as well as in the Ontario riding of Scarborough North. Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall is expected to officially resign from her seat in the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton–Melville, while Conservative MP Larry Brock plans to step down from his seat in the Ontario riding of Brantford–Brant South–Six Nations next month.
