A recent global report highlights a significant decrease in the coverage of living, hard coral reefs worldwide. Research indicates that the upcoming El Niño event could be exceptionally intense, impacting coral health. The Status of Coral Reefs of the World 2025 report reveals that marine heatwaves and bleaching events have severely affected coral populations, reducing global hard coral coverage to around 25 percent.
Lead author Manuel González Rivero notes that coral cover was higher in the 1980s, emphasizing the shrinking window for coral recovery due to more frequent extreme ocean heat events. The report shows a concerning 9.5 percent decline in coral cover compared to previous decades, signaling substantial losses globally, primarily attributed to climate change impacts.
The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network’s seventh status report, based on data from nearly 37,000 reef sites, indicates a consistent decline in hard coral cover since 1980. Global bleaching events, triggered by rising ocean temperatures, leave corals vulnerable to disease and mortality, affecting various marine ecosystems that depend on them for survival.
While corals can recover given time, recent events, including three out of four recorded global bleaching events occurring in the last 15 years, have hindered their resilience. The report highlights declines in regions like Australia, the Caribbean, and the western Pacific, calling for urgent global and regional action to protect these critical ecosystems.
The escalating ocean temperatures, driven by human-induced climate change, pose a severe threat to coral reefs globally. Researchers stress the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate further coral degradation.
