The debate, held on June 27, 2024, showcased Joe Biden struggling with freezing on camera, searching for responses, and appearing disoriented.
In an upcoming CBS News interview scheduled to air before the release of her memoir on June 2, Jill expressed her distress, stating she had never seen Joe in such a state before. She recalled feeling scared and unsure of what was happening during the debate.
Following the event, Jill publicly supported Joe, commending his efforts and knowledge during the debate. Despite concerns raised by both supporters and critics about Joe’s mental acuity post-debate, Jill stood by her husband.
The White House initially attributed Joe’s performance to a cold, then to jet lag from a recent trip, and eventually to information overload from intense debate preparation. Joe’s health had been a topic of discussion since he announced his intention to seek a second term in April 2023, considering his age of 81 and status as the oldest elected president.
Facing pressure, Joe withdrew from the presidential race on July 21, 2024, and endorsed Kamala Harris as his replacement. However, Harris ultimately lost to Trump in the Electoral College vote, marking the first Democratic popular vote defeat in two decades.
While Jill’s forthcoming memoir, “View from the East Wing,” is expected to shed light on her experiences, a former White House staffer, Michael LaRosa, criticized the timing of her candid revelations, noting that shaping public perception retroactively is challenging.
The Bidens, facing financial constraints after leaving the White House with modest assets, are counting on the earnings from Jill’s book and Joe’s upcoming memoir to bolster their finances. The actual payment for Jill’s memoir has not been disclosed yet.
