“Exploring Manosphere Influencers Worldwide”

Louis Theroux’s Netflix program, “Inside the Manosphere,” explored the rise of the ultra-masculine group, with figures like self-proclaimed misogynist Andrew Tate, in both the US and UK earlier this year. In a BBC World Service documentary titled “Manosphere Messiahs,” investigative journalist Jacqui Wakefield delved into the influence of manosphere leaders El Temach (Luis Castilleja) in Mexico and Andrew Kibe in Kenya. El Temach boasts 7.3 million TikTok followers and 2 million on Instagram, while Andrew Kibe has 464,000 Instagram followers and 530 million TikTok views.

According to Jacqui Wakefield, content creators in developing nations aspire to the fame, wealth, and power of individuals like Andrew Tate and HS TikkyTokky after witnessing their success.

The documentary highlighted the propagation of manosphere jargon popularized by Andrew Tate, who is currently facing allegations, including inappropriate relations with a minor. Jacqui Wakefield questions whether influencers like former DJ Kibe, who goes by the moniker ‘Jesus’ and promotes controversial views about women, genuinely believe their statements or are merely seeking a larger following.

Jacqui Wakefield spoke to women impacted by these ideologies, revealing significant negative consequences. Kenyan student Joy claimed that female candidates in student elections required male companions to enhance their chances of winning, illustrating a concerning trend.

Followers of Kibe reportedly hold beliefs that undermine women’s capabilities and suitability for leadership roles, as stated by Kenyan supporter Ryan, who credited Kibe with aiding his transition from adolescence to manhood.

Dr. Awino Okech from SOAS University described the challenges faced by men and boys drawn to figures like Kibe, emphasizing the vulnerability of individuals dealing with mental health issues in societies with high unemployment rates.

In contrast to blaming external factors, Dr. Okech highlighted the tendency of these individuals to assign blame to women. Similarly, in Mexico, El Temach disseminates messages promoting self-improvement to his 11 million followers.

El Temach’s sister, Alex, expressed surprise at his transformation and attributed it to his emulation of Andrew Tate, suggesting a lack of understanding of feminist principles. Additionally, a victim in Mexico, Fernanda, recounted how manosphere teachings led her former partner to exhibit controlling and threatening behavior towards her.

Fernanda’s ordeal culminated in her ex-partner coercing her to watch El Temach’s content for extended periods, displaying an alarming level of manipulation and aggression. She emphasized the danger posed by individuals who internalize these extremist views.

Jacqui Wakefield concluded that social media platforms have fostered a global surge in misogynistic attitudes, underscoring the urgent need to address this concerning trend.
