An inquest revealed that the circumstances surrounding the death of a father-of-three, who passed away after being restrained on a Jet2 flight following an in-flight “altercation,” are still unclear.
The incident involving Callum Kerr, 35, occurred on a flight from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Manchester on June 22. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reported that Kerr was restrained after allegedly assaulting a passenger and a cabin crew member.
Kerr, accompanied by his partner, had consumed alcohol during the flight and was informed by the cabin crew that they would no longer serve him additional drinks, according to Coroner Zak Golombeck. An altercation took place between Kerr and other passengers as the plane was preparing to land in Manchester, where he refused to retake his seat.
Described as a bareknuckle boxer and cage fighter, Kerr was subdued on the floor by passengers and a crew member, leading to a call to GMP. Upon landing, officers boarded the aircraft and found Kerr unresponsive, restrained in a seated position. CPR was initiated, and Kerr was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital, where he passed away the following day.
Ongoing investigations include a criminal inquiry by the police, an examination by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), and an internal review by Jet2. The coroner is awaiting the final cause of death, which will determine the next steps in the process, with a further hearing scheduled for February 8.
Kerr’s parents attended the hearing, where they were offered condolences. In a tribute, Kerr was remembered as a family man and a sports enthusiast.
Police were called due to reports of aggressive behavior by Kerr towards passengers and crew, leading to assaults. Both GMP and the IOPC are investigating the circumstances surrounding Kerr’s death. Jet2 expressed condolences to Kerr’s family and refrained from further comments pending ongoing investigations.
