A massive fire is currently raging through a popular tourist area in Italy, leading to the evacuation of over 100 individuals. The extensive wildfire has encroached upon Santo Stefano Quisquina town in the Agrigento province, situated close to Palermo in Sicily. Surrounding regions of the well-liked vacation destination are significantly affected, with large columns of dark smoke rising into the sky.
As a precautionary measure, more than 100 people have already been relocated, as authorities express concerns about potential dangers to an oxygen depot, medical clinic, petrol station, and fireworks factory near the fire’s vicinity. A substantial firefighting operation is underway, with specialized aircraft like Canadairs deployed to combat the flames.
The fire’s intensity is exacerbated by sirocco winds, a hot and dry wind originating from the Sahara Desert and blowing northward across the Mediterranean Sea into southern Europe. Reports from L’Unione Sarda indicate that the situation has been labeled as “dramatic” by the mayor of Santo Stefano di Quisquina, Francesco Cacciatore.
Residents in the Canfuto and Bosco districts have been urged by officials to evacuate immediately. Road closures are in effect on both directions of the 118 state road Corleonese Agrigentina. In Agrigento, the fire has reportedly approached the Andromeda Theatre, while additional blazes erupted in Catania, prompting firefighting responses to multiple wildfire incidents.
Incidents of fire have also been observed along the motorway linking Palermo and Catania, leading to several power outages in central Palermo. Families unaffected by the fire have taken refuge in their homes to shield themselves from the smoke, according to La Republica.
The extreme heat has caused railings and doorknobs to become scorching hot. Smoke has enveloped various neighborhoods, with temperatures in the city exceeding 40 degrees Celsius by 4 am.
