Several individuals have lost their lives following a potent earthquake that hit Peru on Saturday night, leading to a significant emergency response. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported that the earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.6, occurred at a depth of 13.67 miles around 9.24 pm local time.
Reports indicate that numerous residences collapsed in Pumpunya, the most severely affected district, as rescue teams hurried to the location. The epicenter of the quake was approximately seven kilometers south of Chupaca and was felt in various towns in the Mantaro Valley, including Huancayo, Concepción, and Jauja.
The death toll, initially reported as two, has now climbed to five, with authorities cautioning that it may rise further. Peru21 disclosed that police, firefighters, medical personnel, and local officials were mobilized to assist affected individuals and retrieve victims from the impacted area.
