“Fatal Fire at Popular Mallorca Resort Claims Two Lives”

Two individuals lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries following a fire outbreak at a popular destination for British tourists. The incident occurred at a residence in Mallorca, Spain, where nine individuals required treatment for smoke inhalation, and two individuals tragically perished, according to a spokesperson from the Civil Guard.

The fire ignited at approximately 5 am on the third floor of a residential building in the Magaluf area, as reported by the Civil Guard. Despite residents’ attempts to extinguish the fire, it quickly spread throughout the building, leading to the evacuation of more than 12 individuals, with the smoke visible over a considerable distance.

After about two hours, the flames were successfully put out. The nationalities of the victims were not immediately disclosed, and the Civil Guard initiated an investigation into the fire’s cause.

Magaluf, a favored spot for British tourists known for its beach and nightlife attractions, is situated about 14 miles from Palma de Mallorca, the island’s capital. The fire originated on the third floor of Edificio Trianón on C/ Federico García Lorca, near Punta Ballena. The intensity of the fire filled the entire building with smoke, hindering the victims’ escape attempts from their apartments.

According to the Calvià Town Hall, residents made unsuccessful efforts to quell the flames, resulting in the rapid spread of the fire to upper floors. The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, visited the scene and expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, emphasizing the severity of the situation despite initial perceptions of a minor fire.

Amengual highlighted challenging factors that exacerbated the situation, including the difficult access to the burning apartment and individuals congregating in the stairwell instead of remaining in their units, potentially contributing to the fatalities. The mayor conveyed hope for the recovery of a critically injured person receiving treatment at Son Espases Hospital.
