“European Parliament to Open Office in Ottawa for Enhanced EU-Canada Ties”

The European Parliament, a significant entity within the European Union, is preparing to establish a new office in the capital of Canada, Ottawa, in a bid to strengthen connections with the 27-member bloc, according to Prime Minister Mark Carney. Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, expressed in a press release on Monday that the shared values, interests, and dedication to the international rules-based system between Europe and Canada will be further enhanced through closer parliamentary collaboration in Ottawa, making it the 10th city to host such an office and the third in North America after New York and Washington.

The European Parliament functions as a representative assembly comprising elected members from EU member states. While the EU maintains an embassy in Ottawa, it is managed by the European Commission, which operates separately from the parliament as the executive arm of the bloc.

Prime Minister Carney announced plans on Sunday to initiate discussions on establishing a distinct alliance with the European Union, emphasizing that this would not entail seeking membership. He highlighted the alignment of values, shared priorities, and complementary strengths between Canada and the EU as the basis for exploring this unique partnership.
