The blaze, which started on September 7 due to a battery ignition at the 30-hectare facility, has been continuously monitored by fire crews since its inception. Deputy Mayor Cory Snow stated that efforts are focused on containing the fire within its current array until it burns out completely. There is no definite timeline for the fire to extinguish itself, but Snow mentioned that they are likely closer to the end than the beginning.
Residents are advised to follow guidance from the province’s Chief Public Health Office if they notice any changes in air quality. Individuals sensitive to smoke or with respiratory conditions should consider reducing outdoor activities. Last week, a voluntary shelter in place notice was issued for residents and businesses near the solar farm, but city officials do not anticipate reinstating this unless circumstances change.
Air quality testing has ceased, as the Chief Public Health Office has gathered necessary information. Snow assured that any contaminants from the batteries disperse rapidly, posing no ongoing threat to nearby individuals.
