A father shared the terrifying experience he and his son had when they almost drowned in beach mud but managed to survive by utilizing a skill he acquired while training as a zoologist in rainforests.
James Downs, 47, and his 11-year-old son, Oliver, who enjoy fishing, found themselves stuck in soft mud up to their chests while digging for bait as the tide rose. James, a former science teacher, feared for their lives as their calls for help went unnoticed by beach bystanders who were unaware of the danger.
Recalling the ordeal, James mentioned contemplating the idea of having to swim with his son to safety, emphasizing the importance of teaching children how to swim. His message to parents coincides with The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign, aiming to prevent tragic water-related incidents that claim lives, with 19 fatalities recorded in the UK during one week of a recent heatwave.
Fortunately, James’ zoologist training came to the rescue as he used a bait pump as a probe to navigate the 120-meter trek back to shore at St Mary’s Bay in Kent. Drawing on his experience in the Australian rainforest, he remembered techniques to maneuver through challenging terrain, ultimately saving himself and his son.
Reflecting on the physical and mental strain of the ordeal, James described each step as a strenuous effort akin to weightlifting, highlighting the adrenaline-fueled determination that aided their escape. Upon reaching safety, the duo was met with a surreal response from onlookers who mistook their distress for enjoyment.
In response to the incident, Folkestone & Hythe District Council has installed additional warning signs to raise awareness of the dangers posed by soft mud and sand along coastal areas. Collaborating with various agencies, the council stresses the importance of beach safety and urges visitors to heed safety guidelines and remain vigilant during their visits.
Authorities, including the RNLI, emphasize the need for immediate action in water-related emergencies, advising the public to contact emergency services promptly. HM Coastguard coordinates rescue efforts, deploying appropriate teams to handle diverse scenarios, ensuring swift response to distress calls.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with water activities, following a tragic event where a father lost his life while attempting to save his children on a UK beach. Despite the heroic efforts of bystanders, the father and another rescuer succumbed to the harsh conditions, underscoring the importance of vigilance and safety measures near water bodies.
