Lisa Nandy has made a public declaration that she and her department will no longer engage with Elon Musk’s X platform due to concerns of fostering “abuse and misinformation.” The Culture Secretary announced that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will cease its activities on the platform, previously recognized as Twitter, citing its negative impact on the democratic process.
In a strongly worded statement to her 302,000 followers, Ms. Nandy expressed her decision to depart from the platform, emphasizing that what was once intended for open dialogue and expression now prioritizes harmful content over constructive discussions. She stated her stance against supporting a platform that undermines democracy and community well-being.
This move by Ms. Nandy marks the largest government entity to distance itself from the platform, although various ministers and Members of Parliament have also initiated similar boycotts. Attorney General Richard Hermer previously instructed his office to halt interactions on X, citing concerns of promoting violence and racism, particularly following incidents of unrest in Southampton related to the Henry Nowak case.
Former safeguarding minister Jess Phillips, expressing support for Ms. Nandy’s decision, highlighted the detrimental effects of the platform owned by Musk, known for inciting discord and making controversial statements, such as predicting a civil conflict in Britain.
While some government departments, including No10, have not followed suit in abandoning the platform, there have been calls for the government to reconsider its usage. The relationship between No10 and X has been strained, notably when the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok, permitted the generation of inappropriate content by users, prompting Musk to implement changes.
In a separate incident, former Transport Secretary Louise Haigh criticized the platform’s descent into an “unusable” space due to Musk’s acceptance of hate speech and online abuse. Haigh emphasized the platform’s complicity in facilitating harmful activities, leading her to disengage from it and call for a collective reevaluation of its usage.
