“FIA Announces Engine Changes for 2027/2028 F1 Seasons”

The FIA has declared that modifications to regulations are set to come into force for the 2027 and 2028 Formula One seasons. The key change revolves around the balance between combustion and electric power in the engines, shifting from the current 53/47 split to a 60/40 split in two years.

In a statement, the FIA stated that a consensus has been reached among the FIA, FOM, Teams, and Power Unit Manufacturers regarding changes to the Formula 1 Technical, Sporting, and Financial Regulations for 2027 and 2028. These modifications aim to address concerns related to energy management under the new Power Unit framework, ensuring Qualifying remains competitive without compromising the thrilling racing brought by the new regulations.

The agreement entails a phased adjustment of the Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System contributions over the 2027 and 2028 seasons. It includes specific tweaks to internal combustion engine performance, fuel energy flow, energy recovery system deployment, and enhanced flexibility in energy management.

Initially planned for full implementation before the 2027 season, the changes faced setbacks as some power unit manufacturers withdrew their support. A compromise was eventually reached, leading to a gradual introduction of the alterations.

As a result, there will be reduced reliance on the battery, aiming to address issues such as derating on long straights. The adjustments seek to enhance the overall performance and competitiveness of Formula One racing.

Driver dissatisfaction with the current 50/50 electric-to-combustion engines has been a prevalent issue in the ongoing season. Leading drivers like Max Verstappen have expressed frustration with the regulations, with Verstappen even hinting at retirement if the situation persists.

The recent announcement indicates progress in addressing the challenges faced by drivers, offering hope for improved racing conditions. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers’ championship, extending his lead with a victory at the Monaco Grand Prix.

In the standings, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton follows in second place, with George Russell, Antonelli’s teammate, holding third position ahead of the upcoming race in Barcelona. The competition is heating up as the season progresses, promising thrilling battles on the track.
