Argos is currently offering a new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, as a subscription-free alternative to Sky Q. This device provides features like recording programs, pausing live TV, and storing content on its built-in hard drive, similar to Sky’s premium service. The key advantage of the Manhattan S4-R is that it offers access to over 100 channels without any monthly fees, as it works with Freesat and utilizes existing satellite dishes for free TV channels such as BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, and more.
The Manhattan S4-R boasts a user-friendly interface with built-in search functionalities and access to a vast library of on-demand entertainment, supporting popular apps like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4. While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat’s appeal lies in its free-to-watch model.
Priced at £219.99, the Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is now available at retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions anticipated soon due to high demand. Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted the device’s enhanced recording capabilities, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings, making it an attractive option for households seeking a more affordable and flexible TV service.
In addition to the Manhattan S4-R, the Pleio puck has emerged as another disruptive device in the TV market, offering over 50 live channels through internet streaming. Priced at £99.99, the Pleio puck includes a gaming controller and access to a variety of online games. Sky has also announced a 20% price reduction for its Sky Glass Air TV ahead of the World Cup, with prices starting from £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model can opt for prices starting from £11 per month.
