Zelenskyy Opposes Election Amid Conflict

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has expressed strong opposition to holding an election during the ongoing conflict with Russia, stating that such a move would be detrimental to the unity of the country. His remarks, made public recently, were in response to former defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov’s call for a wartime poll, which has stirred significant debate in Ukraine.

The unexpected dismissal of Fedorov last month led to widespread protests, with some initially supporting his reinstatement but later hesitating at the idea of conducting an election amidst the conflict with Russia. Zelenskyy emphasized that organizing elections during wartime is prohibited by Ukrainian law and highlighted the logistical challenges posed by the security situation and the displacement of millions of Ukrainians.

While Zelenskyy’s approval rating remains relatively stable at around 60%, recent polls indicate that most Ukrainians prefer to postpone elections until the cessation of hostilities. The president suggested that a wartime election could be feasible if security guarantees were provided by Kyiv’s allies, although no such proposal has been put forward.

Zelenskyy underscored the need to focus on ending the war and safeguarding Ukraine’s independence rather than rushing into elections that could potentially divide the nation. He also addressed the rift with Fedorov, praising the former minister’s contributions to modernizing the armed forces before his dismissal over reported disagreements with military leadership.

Moreover, Zelenskyy recounted an incident involving inaccurate information from the Defense Ministry that led to a misunderstanding with former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the use of Starlink technology in Russia. The Ukrainian president clarified that the misinformation stemmed from the ministry’s assertion that SpaceX had approved Ukraine’s access to Starlink for military operations over Russian territory, a claim later refuted by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

The complex dynamics surrounding the call for a wartime election and the challenges of managing misinformation in international relations have added layers of complexity to Ukraine’s political landscape during a critical period.
