United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed any notion of a trade war with Canada and humorously downplayed the threat of Canada deploying “submarines from the Edmonton mall.” Bessent also implied that Prime Minister Mark Carney is prolonging the political dispute between the two nations for personal gain.
During an interview with CNBC, Bessent emphasized that engaging in a trade war with a country significantly larger, like Canada, is not feasible. He quipped about the unlikely scenario of Canada using submarines from the Edmonton mall against the U.S.

Bessent criticized Carney for escalating the situation and prioritizing political gains over the interests of Canadians. He alleged that Carney’s actions were detrimental to the country and suggested that the prime minister was exploiting the situation for personal and party benefits.
Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith highlighted the mutual harm caused by the ongoing trade dispute, emphasizing that neither country benefits from a tariff war. Smith stressed the importance of returning to negotiation tables to mitigate the adverse effects on small businesses and workers on both sides of the border.
She expressed Canadian confusion and disappointment over the strained relations with the U.S., emphasizing the strong alliance between the two nations and the need for constructive dialogue to strengthen economic ties.
