Curtis Dagenais appeared in a Saskatoon court for a hearing, two decades after he committed the murders of two Saskatchewan RCMP officers and wounded another. Dagenais received three life sentences without parole for 25 years for the first-degree murders of RCMP constables Marc Bourdages and Robin Cameron, and the attempted murder of Const. Michelle Knopp. The tragic incident occurred when Dagenais shot the officers following a police pursuit that ended in a collision between their vehicle and his blue GMC truck on rural roads on July 6, 2006.
The focus of the current court session is Dagenais’s truck, with the Crown seeking its forfeiture and subsequent destruction. Dagenais, serving his sentences at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary, is anticipated to attend the hearing via video conference. The prosecution highlighted that the truck had been overlooked, leading to the forfeiture application. Although an initial forfeiture attempt was made in 2021, Dagenais contested it, awaiting a response from Innocence Canada, an organization that supports individuals claiming wrongful convictions. However, Innocence Canada did not take on his case.
Despite the renewed application for the truck’s forfeiture, Dagenais continues to oppose it. He believes that the bullet holes in the truck could provide evidence supporting his innocence. Justice Daryl Labach granted Dagenais additional time to secure legal representation during a hearing in June, emphasizing that the application would proceed without further delays. Dagenais previously appealed his convictions to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, which upheld the guilty verdict in a ruling from 2012.
