A nationwide trial is set to begin to support individuals using appetite-suppressing injections in maintaining their weight loss. These injections have gained popularity globally, with over two million Britons using them, but concerns exist regarding weight regain upon discontinuation. Studies indicate that ceasing the weekly injections often leads to regaining lost fat without recovering lost muscle and bone mass.
The trial will recruit participants from 94 GP practices nationwide to evaluate the effectiveness of specialized clinics in helping individuals sustain weight loss. The importance of counseling and support is emphasized to facilitate significant dietary and lifestyle changes for enduring weight management. Limited NHS resources for providing such support have led to the rationing of weight loss drugs, prompting many users to resort to private purchases.
The NHS aims to assess the viability of community-based support hubs as a cost-effective means of prescribing weight loss medications. Participants will engage in regular consultations to assess their nutritional status, physical well-being, work engagement, and overall health. Dr. Helen Parretti, lead researcher from the University of East Anglia, advocates for a new care model centered on community-based support clinics to address the challenges associated with obesity management medications.
As per prescribing data, 2.4 million individuals in the UK utilize appetite-suppressing drugs, with an additional 8% of the population contemplating their use. These drugs mimic the hormone GLP-1, regulating hunger and satiety, now available in tablet form. Despite the high demand for weight loss treatments, a significant portion of the population accesses them through costly private prescriptions due to NHS rationing.
Funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the upcoming trial could provide the NHS with a scalable solution for offering necessary support and expanding drug prescription coverage. Professor Olivia Wu, NIHR program director, stresses the importance of ongoing care to help individuals maintain weight loss and improve long-term health outcomes.
Commencing in 2028 with 1,000 participants, the randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of support hubs in sustaining weight loss over 12 months. Dr. Parretti envisions these hubs to be staffed by trained primary care professionals supported by specialized weight-management teams, offering regular assessments, blood tests, nutritional monitoring, and personalized self-care guidance.
Previous research by Oxford University revealed that individuals often regain lost weight within a year of discontinuing weight loss injections, highlighting the necessity for long-term drug use. Moreover, a study from the University of Copenhagen indicated that a considerable portion of weight loss from injections comprises muscle and bone mass, posing challenges for weight maintenance and health in the long run.
The trial, led by the University of East Anglia in collaboration with several other universities, aims to address the complexities of weight management and provide sustainable solutions for individuals seeking lasting results.
