A judge has suggested that banks could assist bereaved families affected by disgraced funeral director Robert Bush by reimbursing them for their financial losses. Mr. Justice Hillard made this statement following the emotional testimonies from police officers and families impacted by Bush earlier today. The officers expressed shock after discovering deceased individuals, including a fetus, in a bag at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, with one officer describing it as the most distressing experience of his career. James Milligan, the lead officer for chemical hazards at Humberside Police, recounted the moment when they uncovered the remains of Jasmine Beverley’s infant, leading to a sense of disbelief and anger among the team.
PC Jason Sutcliffe also shared his distress at finding the fetus, emphasizing the lasting impact on him despite his resilience. Maxine Hill recounted how her parents were deceived by Bush when they purchased funeral plans from Legacy in Hull. Tragically, her parents passed away without receiving the justice they deserved, as her mother, Margaret, died in May 2024, and her father, John, a year later in June 2025. The stress of financial losses due to Bush’s actions added to their already challenging circumstances, with the bank refusing to refund the cash payments made by her mother. Her father did receive a refund from TSB Bank, but the money was later withdrawn, causing further distress.
Maxine expressed her disappointment and betrayal by Bush, who appeared kind and trustworthy on the surface. She also raised concerns about the safety of her husband’s ashes, which were entrusted to Bush for safekeeping. The court learned that Bush defrauded 226 individuals by selling unauthorized funeral plans and pocketing over half a million pounds over nearly 12 years. During his sentencing hearing, victims shared their experiences of being deceived by Bush, who offered lower prices to lure customers in before exploiting them.
Bush pleaded guilty to numerous charges, including preventing lawful burials, theft, fraud, and fraudulent trading, spanning from 2012 to 2024. He is set to be sentenced for 67 offenses committed over 12 years. The court proceedings shed light on the extent of Bush’s fraudulent activities and the devastating impact on the victims left in his wake.
