The topic of small boat crossings has been a focal point for Reform and the Tories, with Nigel Farage fueling fears of a migrant “invasion.” Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp’s involvement in videos on small boats drew attention, particularly when he alleged a French warship intimidated him with live rounds during an interview at sea.
When asked about changing the discourse, Burnham emphasized the need to confront the issue directly, enhance border control, provide assistance to those in need, and implement a new approach to the problem.
Tragic incidents, including deaths during Channel crossings, underscore the urgency of the situation. Efforts to enhance enforcement and surveillance capabilities were demonstrated during Burnham’s visit to Dover, where he examined a migrant-carrying boat and a surveillance drone used for monitoring small boat activities.
Meanwhile, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood visited NCA headquarters to reinforce the government’s commitment to doubling resources dedicated to combating organized immigration crime. Mahmood highlighted progress in addressing small boat crossings but reiterated the importance of dissuading individuals from undertaking perilous journeys.
Recent data revealed a rise in arrivals, with 326 individuals reaching the UK on Saturday, bringing the total to 2,057 since Burnham assumed office. The busiest day for small boat crossings this year was Wednesday, with 752 migrants arriving in the UK, a pattern influenced by weather conditions, according to the Home Office.
