A foreign man has been apprehended in connection with the tragic death of Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a 38-year-old Scottish woman whose body was found concealed in a suitcase in Athens. The discovery was made by a homeless individual in an abandoned structure in the Kypseli area on July 18, with indications suggesting that Ross passed away around five to seven days before being located.
Greek authorities, specifically the Hellenic Police, were able to confirm the victim’s identity through fingerprint analysis. Toxicology tests are currently ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding her demise, as the cause of death remains undisclosed.
Ross traveled to Greece on June 26 and initially resided with acquaintances in Piraeus before allegedly planning to meet American friends in another part of Athens, although this meeting’s occurrence is uncertain.
The suspect, a 26-year-old man, was identified through video surveillance and subsequently confessed to the crime. It is alleged that he placed Ross’s body in a suitcase and transported it to the abandoned location where it was discovered. Subsequent investigations revealed that he utilized the victim’s bank card for cash withdrawals, and authorities found a replica pistol and a knife at his residence. He is facing charges of manslaughter, robbery, and weapon law violations.
In earlier statements, a spokesperson for the Greek police emphasized the investigative efforts undertaken to resolve the case, expressing determination to uncover the individual responsible for abandoning the suitcase without leaving traceable evidence.
Both the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Police Scotland have extended their support to Ross’s family, offering condolences and cooperation with the ongoing investigations in Greece.
