Andy Burnham has expressed support for The Mirror’s water safety initiative following a series of tragic drownings that claimed numerous lives. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the risks associated with open water swimming, especially given the recent surge in fatalities due to people seeking relief from hot weather.
Since May 24, around 40 individuals have tragically lost their lives after encountering difficulties in open water locations across the UK. Mr. Burnham has endorsed The Mirror’s campaign, named in memory of Sam Haycock, a 16-year-old who drowned in a reservoir in South Yorkshire last year.
Acknowledging the significance of water safety education, the Prime Minister commended The Mirror’s advocacy on the issue. He stressed the need for improved safety measures around water bodies and emphasized the importance of ensuring proper swimming support for children as part of the educational curriculum.
In solidarity with bereaved families and lifesaving organizations, The Mirror has called for urgent action to address drowning incidents as a national emergency. This includes advocating for ‘Sam’s Law,’ which would mandate the installation of safety equipment around high-risk bodies of water.
Sam’s father, Simon Haycock, expressed gratitude for Andy Burnham’s endorsement of the campaign, highlighting the ongoing need to sustain momentum in addressing water safety concerns. Similarly, Vanessa Abbess, campaigning for her son Joe who drowned in 2023, praised Burnham’s support and urged swift action in appointing a Water Safety Minister to lead drowning prevention initiatives.
Various stakeholders, including the Royal Life Saving Society UK, have lauded the Prime Minister’s backing of the campaign, emphasizing the necessity of water safety education to prevent further tragedies. They have called for increased funding for schools in England to deliver comprehensive swimming and water safety programs, echoing commitments made in Scotland and Wales.
As efforts intensify to promote water safety awareness and prevent drownings, collaboration and concrete actions are essential to effect meaningful change and save lives.
