An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale has struck a popular vacation spot in Spain frequented by Brits. The incident, which occurred in Murcia today, prompted a surge in emergency calls as reported by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) at 11:59 am, lasting several seconds.
This seismic event follows a recent 4.7 magnitude tremor that hit Naples, Italy, causing damage to structures, vehicles, and resulting in approximately 20 injuries on Friday. The impact of today’s earthquake in Spain was felt in neighboring areas like Alicante, a favored holiday destination for British tourists who also visit nearby Benidorm, and Albacete.
Centered in the town of Librilla at a depth of approximately 3 miles, the earthquake affected Murcia, located about 18 miles away. Emergency services received numerous calls following the incident but have not reported any personal or material damage so far.
According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), there have been seven tremors in the days leading up to this earthquake, with a total of 21 recorded over the past month. This latest earthquake marks the strongest in the last six months, surpassing the one on June 3 with a magnitude of 2.3.
