Former US President Donald Trump has drawn attention to the number of American casualties in the ongoing conflict with Iran, comparing it favorably to past wars. Trump made these remarks on Truth Social, listing the death toll of US soldiers in previous conflicts such as the Vietnam, Korean, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars in a boastful manner.
In his post, Trump highlighted the number of fatalities in each war: Vietnam War saw 58,220 deaths over 19 years, the Korean War had 36,574 deaths in 3 years, the Iraq War claimed 4,600 lives over 9 years, and the Afghanistan War resulted in 2,000 deaths over 20 years. Referring to the Iran conflict as the “Iran Military Conflict,” Trump stated that 18 Americans had died in this particular engagement.
Following the controversial post, which included a reference to a supposed “Venezuela War” with no casualties, criticism arose from various politicians. Trump’s comments came shortly after Iran’s attacks on US bases in Jordan and Iraq, where four American service members lost their lives, with an additional 500 reported injuries according to the Pentagon.
Since the conflict began on February 28, Iran has suffered more than 3,400 casualties, including 1,568 civilians and at least 236 children, as reported by Reuters citing the US-based human rights group HRANA. The figures remain unverified by independent sources.
Trump’s post sparked strong reactions from politicians like former Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene and Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom, who condemned Trump’s apparent disregard for the lives lost. Representative Jason Crow criticized Trump’s post, emphasizing the importance of honoring and respecting the fallen service members and their families.
Trump expressed intentions to attend the dignified transfer of the four soldiers killed in the Iranian attacks and emphasized the sacrifices made by American troops in preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He stated that the US’s actions against Iran were in tribute to the fallen soldiers.
